Luxury anger seems like it’s also a thing. A lot of rich white MAGA men love to stoke outrage among their followers when they know full well it won’t affect their stock options or use of a private jet. But they’ll go on Fox News or whatever and spout off this populist rhetoric— while they’re actually working in the back rooms to do the opposite. More and more frequently, they’re generating outrage about things that aren’t even real — straw men or buzzwords that sound like gibberish outside of their echo chambers.
Republicans have been honing their “art” of stoking outrage, using it to create wedge issues they can make the focal point of their campaigns, and then screwing working people over every which way as soon as they’re in legislative sessions and their voters have moved on to the next false debate in the culture wars.
